I tried Crest Whitestrips (which takes 30 minutes), but they are too strong for the teeth and cause pain afterwords. What choice?

In summary. None. All dehydrate the teeth causing sensitivity, but get some fluoride rinse your dentist and help you tremendously! It costs just $ 12 or less, or you could try things on the counter, is not as effective, but it works.

FYI: Ask your dentist. Get a dentist to do could cost more than the front, but look better and last longer, so that might be better and less expensive. And, at least, your dentist may recommend a store brand.
